Ever wondered what a perfect summer day is like for the locals?

For many, it starts early, with a stroll on the sand to witness the breathtaking sunrise. Before heading home, they might lay down some towels to reserve that ideal beach spot for later.

Around 9 or 10 a.m., it’s time for breakfast at a local bar. The order? Usually, coffee prepared in the distinctive Málaga style (but that’s a treat for another article!), perhaps accompanied by a refreshing orange juice. If churros are on offer, they’re hard to resist. But the real stars are the pitufo (a small baguette, not a Smurf!) or a viena (a medium baguette, and definitely not the city), filled with deliciousness: ham and cheese, olive oil with crushed tomato and salt, tortilla and mayonnaise, tomato and Spanish Serrano ham, tuna, Spanish cheese, and so much more.

The rest of the day is often spent at the beach. Locals come prepared with a sunshade, a small cooler packed with cold drinks, fruits, and snacks like chips. Card games or a bit of beach tennis or volleyball might also be part of the fun.

Lunch, typically enjoyed between 1 and 2 p.m., means a visit to a Chiringuito (beach restaurant). Espetos (Málaga’s iconic sardines grilled on skewers) are a firm favorite. If paella is available, it’s often a popular choice. A fresh salad and a tortilla (Spanish omelette) are always good choices to go with everything. And for dessert? Nothing beats a cool, refreshing ice cream!

After lunch comes siesta-time! Some head home to their beds for a relaxing nap, while others prefer to unwind on the beach in the shade, lulled by the sound of the waves (though a bit of sunburn is always a risk!).

As the day winds down, around 6 or 7 p.m., it’s time to leave the beach for a refreshing shower, a bit of rest at home, and preparations for the evening’s dinner. Dinner usually starts fashionably late, around 9 p.m. The focus? Tapas! These small, savory dishes are perfect for sharing, sampling a variety of flavors, and enjoying good conversation.

To cap off the perfect day, drinks are in order. Locals often seek out a beach club or bar for a Mojito or another delicious cocktail, or just some cool beers.

And then, probably around or after midnight, it’s time to head home and get some rest.

It truly has been a perfect summer day!
